Is mediation actually cheaper than going through lawyers?

We don't really fight but we don't agree on the house. Mediation seems cheaper but I don't fully understand the difference.

Family mediator in Denver. Mediation is usually cheaper when both people show up willing to negotiate in good faith and there isn't a power imbalance. Typical cost is 4-8 sessions at $200-$400/hr split between you, plus a separate consulting attorney for each side to review the agreement. Litigation often runs 5-10x that. The thing mediation can't fix: if one party is hiding assets, mediation has no subpoena power. If that's a concern, you want a litigator with discovery tools, not a mediator.
Agreeing with Sara. One more point: in mediation YOU draft the agreement with the mediator's help. In litigation a judge makes the call. People underestimate how much the second feels like losing control even when you 'win.' Mediation is harder work but the agreements last longer.
