Just got served and I have no idea what's happening

A guy handed me an envelope at work. There's a petition and a summons. It says I have 30 days. 30 days for what exactly? I'm shaking.
Breathe. 30 days is the deadline to file a Response. You don't have to agree with anything in the petition, you just have to file a Response so the case doesn't go forward by default.
Find a self-help center near your courthouse first thing tomorrow. They walk you through the Response form for free.
