Just got laid off — how fast can I modify support?
Support is set at $1,800/mo. I just lost my job. Can I modify before I miss a payment?

File the RFO TOMORROW. Modifications in CA are only retroactive to the date you filed the request — not the date you lost the job. Every month you delay is a month of arrears at the old number that you can't claw back. File the FL-300 + FL-150 even before you have a new job or full new financials; you can update the paperwork as you go. Apply for unemployment immediately and document your job search (the court will want to see it). Contact the other parent and ask in writing for an interim agreed reduction while the motion is pending — sometimes they'll agree to avoid arrears. General info, not advice for your case.
