Got home, key doesn't work. Landlord won't answer. I haven't been evicted, just behind a month. What do I do?

This is an illegal self-help eviction in every state I'm aware of. Call the police now and report a 'lockout' — most jurisdictions treat this as either a civil violation or a crime (CA Civil Code §789.3 makes it a misdemeanor and gives you damages of $100/day + actual damages + attorney fees). Police can sometimes order the landlord to let you back in same day. Whether they do or not, get to a tenant-defense legal aid IMMEDIATELY tomorrow — there's a 'temporary restraining order' / emergency motion procedure that can get you back in within days. Document the changed lock with photos. Keep every text/voicemail. The financial liability for the landlord on this is significant; they often back down fast once a lawyer calls.

If you don't know who to call, your county's housing-rights hotline can usually escalate to police if needed. In CA, Tenants Together (888-495-8020) routes lockout calls.
