How do I get my security deposit back?

In CA the landlord has 21 days from move-out to return the deposit OR send a written itemized statement explaining deductions, with receipts for any deduction over $125 (Civil Code §1950.5). After 21 days with nothing, write a demand letter (certified mail, return receipt) referencing §1950.5 and giving 7-14 days to comply or you'll sue. If you have to sue, small claims is the right venue for amounts up to $10k. If the landlord acted in 'bad faith,' you can recover up to twice the deposit as a penalty in addition to the deposit itself. Document the move-out condition with date-stamped photos NOW even if you didn't at the time — receipts and a clean rental history help too. Not advice for your case.
