My uncle made me executor. He just died. I have no idea what to do first.

Week 1: order 8-10 certified death certificates from the funeral home. Notify the Social Security Administration. Locate the original will. Cancel ongoing services (subscriptions, credit cards if appropriate). Don't pay creditors yet — they need to file claims through probate. Week 2-4: meet with a probate attorney to file the petition for probate; the court appoints you officially and issues Letters Testamentary. Then you can access accounts. Don't commingle estate money with your own — open a separate estate account. Keep meticulous records of every dollar in and out. You can be paid a statutory fee from the estate for your work. Executor liability is real but the duties are mostly procedural and a competent probate attorney makes them manageable. Don't try to do this alone unless the estate is very simple.
