In CA a wage assignment is issued by default with every support order — but both parents can ask the court to 'stay' it as long as payments are timely. My honest advice: if there's any history of conflict or unreliability, keep the wage assignment in place. It's automatic, traceable, and avoids the awkward 'where's the check' conversation. The cost to the paying parent is zero — the employer just routes the payment. The only downside is the employer learns about the order, which some payors find embarrassing. That's not your problem to solve.
